History
Our story begins in the early 1800s, when the Snook family rode up from Texas and planted their roots in the wide-open country of northeast Wyoming. What started as a simple dream—backed by grit, heart, and hard work—grew into a legacy that still runs strong today.
Kara Creek Ranch first opened as a small guest ranch in Hulett, welcoming just a handful of visitors at a time under the guidance of Monte Snook. As word spread and demand grew, Monte followed the trail to Sundance, Wyoming, where he laid the foundation for what Kara Creek Ranch would eventually become.
Today, the ranch has grown into a thriving, multifaceted operation. What began with a few guests now includes a full beef business, a pheasant farm, a saloon, a gift shop, and of course, the guest ranch that started it all. The land is home to more than 5,000 head of cattle, a hardworking crew of cowboys, and a family that still wakes up every day to steward the same ground their ancestors claimed generations ago.
Kara Creek Ranch remains proudly owned and operated by Monte Snook—with his daughter, Cassie, and her two children riding alongside him to carry forward the family tradition.
More Than a Ranch—A Year-Round Way of Life
Kara Creek Ranch moves with the seasons, each one bringing its own pace, purpose, and traditions. In May and June—and again in September and October—the guest ranch comes alive as visitors from around the world join us to ride, relax, and experience the life we live every day. July and August bring our Cowboy Summer Program, designed especially for younger or newer riders to build confidence in the saddle. Through guided trail rides, hands-on horsemanship, and plenty of time spent getting comfortable with their horses, these riders get a true taste of western life at a pace that suits them. As autumn settles in, the focus shifts to our pheasant farm, which runs from September through March and keeps the ranch bustling through the colder months.
And through all of it, the everyday work of the ranch doesn’t slow down. There are still more than 40 horses to care for and over 5,000 head of cattle that rely on us rain or shine. Fences need fixing, guests and crew need feeding, vehicles need repairing, and hay needs cutting to prepare for the long Wyoming winters. No matter the season or the weather, the ranch keeps moving—and so do we. Each day brings new challenges and new rewards, yet all of them are tied together by the same spirit of authenticity, camaraderie, and hard work that defines Kara Creek Ranch.
In that constant motion, something deeper happens: Kara Creek becomes a second home to many of the crew who come here to work the land, ride the country, and live the cowboy way. What starts as a job often turns into a lifelong bond, with the ranch becoming a second family—one built on shared work, shared meals, and shared moments out on the wide Wyoming plains. And that sense of belonging extends to our guests as well. Many arrive as visitors, but they come as guests and leave as family, carrying a piece of Kara Creek with them long after they’ve headed down the trail.
